Installing WordPress

October 27, 2012 by curvs 2 Comments

OK, so now you have an idea for a website, you have a domain name and you have web hosting for your new site!  Additionally, if you are reading this, you have likely decided to use WordPress as the software on which your new site will be built.

WordPress - How can I install it on my server?

WordPress – How can I install it on my server?

I have been blogging for years, and I believe that using WordPress is a wise decision.  It seems that the majority of others agree with me too, as WordPress is the most popular blogging software out there.  What was that?  You are not going to have a blog?  No problem.  These days, WordPress is used for non-blog websites too!  In fact, even though WordPress is not overtly a Content Management System (CMS), a lot of people use it as a CMS these days, including me!  What’s a CMS?  It just means that you can use WordPress to manage the content on your site and create a site that is good looking and also nicely organized.  In other words, it is the perfect software platform for your website!

How do I get WordPress?  How can I install the software?

Really, it is not difficult.  I am going to offer you four methods of getting WordPress software up and running on your site.

  1. Bob Martin

You may not have noticed, but if you signed up for HostGator web hosting using my affiliate link, I will install WordPress for you, free of charge!  Yep, absolutely free, and I will also send you some information and video links on how to use the software.  This is only available if you signed up through my link (if you have yet to sign up, just click here to sign up and have me install your software for free).  So, no hassles at all for you, I’ll take care of all of the technical stuff for you, and show you how to get started. To see all the details of this free offer, just click here.

  2. Fantastico

    Fantastico

Most web hosting companies offer a software installer script called “Fantastico.”  Just log in to your control panel for your hosting and look for the logo that is shown on the right.  Click on that, then select WordPress and follow the instructions from there.  You will end up with a fully installed WordPress site, ready for your customization and for you to get started!  It’s that easy.

  3. QIIf you signed up for HostGator, as I suggested, you can also select to install WordPress using the “Quick Install” software that HostGator provides.  Just look for the logo that you see on the right, when you log in to your hosting control panel.  Click on that, and follow the instructions provided, you’ll be in business in no time!  Quick (as the name implies), Easy, and hassle free!  You can’t go wrong.  For me, I prefer Quick Install compared to Fantastico.  The two are similar, but I find that Quick Install is often ahead of Fantastico when it comes to things like new versions of the software and such.  It’s a personal choice, though, and either one will work just fine for you.
  4. WordPress

If you don’t like using these simple install scripts like Fantastico or Quick Install, you can always do a manual installation of the WordPress Software.  This site is geared toward beginners in the WordPress game, so I am not going to go deeply into this method of installation.  This is meant for more advanced users, and few beginners would choose to manually install WordPress, in my opinion.  Basically, what you would want to do is to go download the WordPress software.  After you have downloaded WordPress software, you will need to FTP it up to your server, then follow the instructions provided by WordPress.  It’s not too hard to do, but why not just use Fantastico or Quick install for the easiest and least painful way of getting WordPress up and running on your server?

OK, so now you have WordPress installed and running on your server, right?  If you do, then you are ready to start making the site look the way you want it to, adding content to the site, and soon you’ll be ready to start inviting visitors to your site!  You’ll be an official Web Publisher!  Congratulations!
